Bird of paradise

I'm trying out Corel Painter 11. I'm hoping to do a few flower or plant studies. I don't usually draw plants with any level of detail, so the experience feels pretty new all around. I was hoping to use the “brushes” more like their real life counterparts, but found myself using them more like drawing tools instead. Does anyone have any tips for transitioning from drawing to painting techniques?
